The Transmission Grid
Botswana’s national electricity grid comprises of 1,246 kilometers of 400kV transmission lines, 2,200 kilometers of 220kV lines and 2,162 kilometers of 132kV lines. It further includes a total of 54 substations that facilitate bulk electricity supply to various customer categories. Distribution is provided at voltages of 33kV and 11kV, with sub-transmission operating at 66kV.
The SCADA System: The grid is operated and maintained by BPC through a computer- based Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.The Corporation also has field operations that are supported by Staff stationed at seven (7) Transmission Service Centers located in Gaborone, Francistown, Palapye, Jwaneng, Maun, Sowa, and Selebi-Phikwe.
Recent and Current Transmission Projects
In furtherance to this, significant investments have been made and continue to be made in the transmission system to ensure adequacy and reliability of the power system.
