Job Purpose
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To organise, coordinate and supervise operations of the power station during shifts to ensure safe, efficient, and cost effective operations and effective resolution of technical problems.

Principal Accountabilities/Responsibilities

DUTIES
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATOR / EXPECTED OUTPUT
Operational Management Organizes the activities on shifts and allocates duties and responsibilities
Provides technical support for staff in relation to plant and equipment being operated at the power station to ensure continuous operation of the plant.
Contributes to the station planning process by identifying areas of operational concerns and any impacts or conflicts to ensure safe and efficient operation of the plant.
Checks and monitors the day to day operations of the plant to ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures, housekeeping and safety practices and standards.
Coordinates re-commissioning of plant and equipment after repair or maintenance.
Production Sets operational shift targets and monitors their achievement to ensure the attainment of overall capability plans
Authorises the implementation of solutions in emergency situations to ensure the continual generation of power and safety.
Initiates investigations of all plant failures, trips and any other incidents, which may cause loss of generation to establish the root cause and recommends or takes necessary remedial action
Prepares technical reports on the condition and activities of the plant including incident/accidents to ensure awareness of plant activities and current or potential problems
Coordinates the availability of inputs (e.g. water, coal, fuel, material e.t.c.) for operational requirements for the shift
Project Management Delivers assigned projects by working within an established program management plan 
Coordinates all Operations activities and release of equipment within the Outage Plan
Asset Management Provides input into the development of Plant Life Reliability and Maintainability Plan for an area within the organization, then monitors the implementation of those plans.
Quality Management Delivers operational activities in accordance with the set Quality Management System
Identifies shortcomings, suggests improvements and implements approved revisions to current compliance processes, systems and procedures within assigned unit and/or discipline.
Solutions Analysis Identifies and evaluates complex expertise-led solutions against a range of criteria to find the ones that best meet business needs.
Diagnosis and analyses all plant reliability incidents and implements remedial action plan to prevent future occurrences
Data Collection & Analysis Works independently to collate and analyze data using pre-determined tools, methods and formats.

Provides information and data for shift’s performance and prepares relevant production reports.
Client & Customer Management Coordinates with the National Control Center on impending outages and operations
Manages relationships with clients to ensure their needs are met in accordance with the set Service Level Agreements
Budgeting & Costing Tracks budgets and brings variances to the attention of Senior Operations Engineer working within established budgeting systems.
Improvement / Innovation Identifies shortcomings and suggests improvements to existing processes, systems and procedures in compliance with the Management of Change Procedures
Policy Development & Implementation Provides input into the development of procedures for an area within the organization, then monitors the implementation of those procedures.
People Management Carries out on-the-job training in order to increase the flexibility, efficiency and capability of the team.
Manages the motivation and discipline of staff in area of responsibility in line with laid down procedures to realize the Corporation’s objectives
Manages the performance of the team by working within an established performance management system
Proposes and implements staff development plans for the area of responsibility to ensure competent, efficient and motivated staff
Safety, Health and Environment Adheres to the Corporation’s SHE Book provides support services by using the organization's safety, health and environment systems and protocols.
Participates in safety inspections and reports on findings to maintain safety of personnel and good housekeeping of the plant.
Issues and cancels safety documents to facilitate repair and maintenance work to be carried out in accordance with BPCs safety standards and procedures.
 
Undertake such other related duties as directed by the supervisor from time to time to meet the exigencies of the Corporation.

Qualifications
A recognised B.Eng./BSc in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Should be a member of the Botswana Engineering Registration Board. 
Additional management qualifications will be an advantage


Experience

​At least six (6) years post qualification experience of which three (3) years is a supervisory role in power plant operations or process plant environment
