BPC EXHIBITS AT THE 2011 WORLD HABITAT DAY COMMEMORATION

The world habitat day is an annual event held on the first Monday of October under different themes. It is a United Nations Designated day used internationally to reflect on issues related to sustainable settlement planning and development. The South East District Council  hosted the world habitat day at the Ramotswa village main Kgotla on 7th October 2011, under the theme; ‘CITIES AND CLIMATE CHANGE’.

The event was graced by the presence of the Minister of Lands and Housing, Honourable Nonofo Molefe who was the guest speaker. The Honourable minister in his speech mentioned that ‘in this new urban era, when most of humanity now living in towns and cities, we must bear in mind that the greatest impacts of disasters resulting from climate change begin and end in cities.’

Exhibiting at the event was a swarm of organisations from all sectors including parastatals, government and private organisations. BPC took pride in showcasing BPC Lesedi eco friendly products as well as disbursing information on our eco friendly practices as we generate and transmit electricity.

Global warming or climate change has been largely associated with human activities and can hence be mitigated to conserve the environment. Activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, land use changes, biomass burning all contribute largely to global warming. BPC in observation of preserving the environment, practices the following:

  • Management of ash waste
Ash generated during coal combustion is trapped in precipitators to prevent it from polluting the environment. Ash generated at the main plant is disposed off at the ash lagoon.

  • Management of CFLs and Fluorescent tubes
Fluorescent tubes and CFLs are crushed and stored safely before they are transported to RSA for safe disposal
  • Management of used oil
Oil spills are cleaned up immediately using oil granules to prevent water and soil pollution. Used oils are stored in main used tanks and transferred to Environmental System to be recycled when the tanks are full.
