Orapa 90MW Turbine power plant handed over to BPC
Orapa 90MW Turbine plant was officially launched on Thursday 13th October 2013 and was handed over to Botswana Power Corporation by Debswana Manging Director Jim Gowans.
The colourful event was graced among other dignitaries , The Minister of Minerals Energy and Water Resources His Hon. Dr PHK Kedikilwe, Members of the Diplomatic Co, Debswana and BPC Board Members and Management teams as well as Boteti Central and Local Authorities and Community leaders.
In his key note address the Minister Dr PHK kedikilwe said, The plant is designed to kick- in when ever there is shortage of power supply during peak hours, he said it is going to be a back up whenever needed. He appluaded the project team for having completed the project at P710Million against the budgted P850 Millionm resulting in a saving of P140 million which he said was a not a small change at all, in Botswana terms.
Debswna Deputyb Board Member Mr Eric Molale shared the same sentiments saying the plant will narrow the gap between the supply and demand of electrity in Botswana , which grew when South Africa started reducing the MW they were importing to us form 2007.
Her Excellency Mrs Michelle Gavin,Ambassoder Of the United States of America In Botswana said America’s General Electric manufactured the Turbines back then, you could see the pride and happiness in her face, as she said The turbines represent the ony two of more than 6000 turbines in General Electric’s Fleet in globally. She said the turbines can use both diesel and gas which becomes cheaper to run and provides cleaner power to the community.
In his RemarkS The Chief Executive Mr Raleru thanked The Government for its support and also expressed his gratitude to Debswana for availling its resouces for construction of the plant.
The managing Director Of Debswana Mr Gowans thanked the project team and said he is confident BPC will use the plant to the maximun.
